Bastyr in the Media November 16, 2012

We're just a week away from Thanksgiving, but if you're hungry for the latest news out of Bastyr University, covered by the news, you can start feasting on this now:

Our first course is Bastyr's Cynthia Lair, featured in a recent Seattle Times Pacific Northwest Magazine piece about smoothies. Tasty bits of information there, Cynthia!

Next up is BCNH Resident Calvin Kwan, ND, who was quoted in a piece about natural medicine in the Yakima Herald.

My two favorite parts of the article:

"The university has seen about a 12 percent increase in enrollment in the past four years, growing from 927 students in 2009 to 1,035 students this year."

"Dr. Calvin Kwan, a first-year resident at Bastyr’s naturopathic clinic, said the school has received several million dollars in grants from the National Institutes of Health to study various natural treatments for cancer.
'We’re trying to build our evidence-based medicine ... that way we can have more respectability when it comes to utilizing our medicine,' he said."

Way to make your first media experience a memorable one, Calvin!

Onto our main course, which is a piece by Eric Yarnell, ND, in the November edition of Naturopathic Doctor News and Review on inguinal hernias. Nice work, Dr. Yarnell!

And for dessert, a nice piece in The Fremocentrist blog featuring Debra Brammer, ND, and her recent talk on better sleep, better energy. Definitely some great tips to chew on for better sleep, Dr. Brammer!

We hope you enjoyed digesting all of these great media hits, but remembered to save room for next week's meal. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

End of 2012 Brings Centennial, Holiday Events

The holidays are fast approaching, which means the Bastyr University Chapel will once again be filled with the sounds of holiday tunes.

Breath of Aire performs at 7 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Bastyr University Chapel.

On Friday, December 7, President and Mrs. Daniel K. Church, PhD, welcome friends and families of Bastyr University as well as neighbors and community guests to an annual holiday concert by Breath of Aire. This free holiday tradition begins at 7 p.m., but you'll want to get there early because the doors open at 6:30 p.m. and seats will fill up fast!

The festivities continue Saturday, December 8, with "Rejoice and Sing" featuring Christmas classics by the Everett Chorale. The event is a fundraiser for the Bastyr Organ Fund; suggested donation is $20 per person or $35 per couple, payable at the door.

Near and dear to the Bastyr community is an event that culminates a year of celebrating the centennial of our namesake. At 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 5, we will unveil a new exhibit honoring the life and legacy of Dr. John Bastyr. Please join us for light refreshments at this intimate event.

Happy Holidays from the Bastyr Department of Marketing and Media!

5 Holiday Tips for Low-Sugar Snacks

As the busy winter holidays quickly approach, here are five tips to help you choose healthier low-sugar snacks, courtesy of Bastyr's Dietetic Intern Diana Tran, BSN/DPD ('12).
  1. Fresh is Best: Fresh fruits and vegetables make great snacks during the holidays.  They are naturally lower in sugar and a great source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber.  Choose fruits and vegetables that are in season because they are full of flavor!  Not sure which fruits or vegetables are in season?  Check out Seasonal Cornucopia for a list of items that are in season.
  2. Nuts:  Having an assortment of nuts in their shells is another great snack for the holidays.  They are full of healthy fats, protein, and fiber.  They are also fun to crack open with a group of friends.
  3. Smoothies: Make festive fruit and veggie smoothies as a snack!   The combinations and flavors are endless.  Just add ice and water and you are ready for a refreshing cool treat!
  4. Whole Grains: Bake whole grain muffins or breads.  Sweeten them and keep them moist with the addition of fresh fruits.  Another benefit is that whole grains keep you fuller longer which minimizes your chances of over-snacking.
  5. Dips: Be creative by making zesty dips!  Try making a roasted beet dip with goat cheese or jazzing up cottage cheese with garlic and fresh herbs.
Food should help nourish your body and bring you joy.  Don’t get bogged down by holiday snacking stress and overly-processed foods.  Whichever options you choose to take during the holidays, just remember to have fun and enjoy!

Bastyr in the Media, November 2, 2012

It's been a few weeks since we last updated you on our media hits, and we've amassed quite an extensive list in that time. Check out who has covered us, and what news and knowledge we've been spreading in newspapers, online and over the airwaves in recent weeks!

Dr. Jamie Corroon was on Q13 Fox News This Morning to talk about how better sleep can mean better energy. As usual, he was a rock star, and smoothly promoted Dr. Brammer's free Living Naturally talk on the same subject Nov. 8. Way to go, Dr. Corroon!

Speaking of our free Living Naturally talks at BCNH, the Fremocentrist blog in Fremont did a nice piece with Cynthia Lair and her recent talk about healthy substitutes to white sugar. Nice job, Cynthia!

The Bothell Reporter showed us some love with coverage about both our annual Haunted Trails event, as well as the great research being done by the Bastyr Integrative Oncology Research Center (BIORC). The latter article also stressed the need for participants in a couple of BIORC cancer trials.

Bastyr alum Maggie Ney, ND ('06), was featured on the nationally syndicated TV show, "The Doctors." This particular segment was all about cleansing and detox diets. Awesome exposure, Dr. Ney!

Bastyr dietitian Mary Purdy, MS, RD, also had her 15 minutes of fame, appearing in a KOMO News Radio piece that focused on the organic vs. non-organic food debate. Well done, Mary!

Finally, Energy Times had a piece about the legacy of Dr. John Bastyr, and called him a "visionary." As we close out the yearlong celebration of what would have been Dr. bastyr's 100th birthday, we couldn't agree more!

Bastyr News Gives Patient's View of Dr. Bastyr

Although all of us who are employed at Bastyr University are enthralled by the legendary physician our institution is named after, many of us never had the privilege to meet the man we praise on a daily basis.

For those of us who aspire to know more about our namesake, we hope to help clarify your image of Dr. John Bastyr with the feature story in the November edition of Bastyr News, which went out to more than 25,000 subscribers over the weekend.

One of Dr. Bastyr's longtime patients, Ariele M. Huff, shares "Memories from an Appointment with Dr. Bastyr," a first-person account of the mysterious illness that brought her to him for the first time, and the 23-year relationship that ensued.

Other articles include:
Plus we've got links to a plethora of events, including a variety of upcoming admissions events, and public events ranging from the Living Naturally talks at Bastyr Center and Quick & Easy Whole Foods Cooking with Beans & Grains to the annual Founders' Day Gala.

Simkin Center Expands to California!

Did you know that Bastyr University California will begin offering renowned Simkin Center for Allied Birth Vocations courses at the San Diego campus in January 2013?

The first course will be taught by the legendary Penny Simkin, PT, and Phyllis Klaus, MFT, LMSW, January 25-26. A few seats are still available, so please help us spread the word!

Read more about the expansion and check out Simkin Center's course calendar for both campuses.

17 Ways to Stay Healthy in School - October Natural Directions

The lead story in October's Natural Directions (the e-newsletter for prospective students) was inspired by a student orientation session on "staying healthy while in school" led by Christy Lee-Engel, ND, LAc, director of the Center for Spirituality, Science and Medicine, and Sarah Lukhang Klippel, ND, a teaching fellow. The two did a great job offering suggestions and compiling tips from others. "17 Ways to Stay Healthy in School," was a popular story that garnered 46 percent of clicks in our October mailing.

Other stories in the newsletter:

First-year student Naika Apeakorang wrote this tender, funny, honest post about her first week at Bastyr.

Students milk goats, make cheese, harvest herbs and cook straight from the garden on this one-week trip.

Catherine Darley, ND, says Bastyr equipped her to help patients find alternatives to sleeping pills.

We've got loads of campus open houses, online events and traveling advisors to help prospective students explore new careers.

Free Lecture Series Returns to Bastyr Center

This fall, Bastyr Center for Natural Health is once again hosting our popular public lecture series, Living Naturally. We have lined up three fantastic events to engage the public:

Sweet Selection: Exploring Sugar and Sugar Alternatives with Cynthia Lair
Saturday, October 27, 10:30 a.m. - noon
With so many sweeteners to choose from, how do you know which ones are best for you? Which ones are healthier, less refined and more environmentally friendly? Join us as we explore the world of sugar and sugar alternatives. We’ll break down the differences and help you make informed choices when it comes to selecting your sweeteners. Presented by Cynthia Lair, BA, CHN, Bastyr University nutrition faculty, cookbook author, and co-producer and host of the online cooking show, Cookus Interruptus.

Better Sleep, Better Energy with Deb Brammer
Thursday, November 8, 6-7:30 p.m.
Many of us can find ourselves off-balance when it comes to our day-and-night routines, but how do we break the cycle of poor sleep and low energy? Bastyr Center faculty practitioner Debra Brammer, ND, will discuss natural strategies to boost your energy and get a solid night's sleep.

Herbal Gift-Making with Crystal Hamby
Saturday, December 1, 10:30 a.m. - noon
Bastyr University faculty member Crystal Hamby will discuss different herbs and ingredient options as well as how to use simple kitchen items to make unforgettable herbal gifts. She will walk attendees through the home-production of three handmade items:
  • Lip balm
  • Body butter
  • Healing salves
No registration is required, but we expect this free event to fill quickly. Prompt arrival is encouraged.

All events will take place at Bastyr Center in Seattle. Join us! Tell your friends!

Is it Balmy in Here?

The marketing and admissions staffs hard at
work crafting their lip balm formulations.
What sets Bastyr's marketing and admissions departments apart? Dedication. Thoughtfulness. And the little touches that make Bastyr a special place for prospective students and clinic patients.

Have you ever seen the all-natural lip balm we give out at Bastyr Center and admissions recruitment events? Did you know that they aren't some fancy product we spent loads of money to have Burt's Bees whip up? Oh, no. These are hand-crafted treasures made by the sage minds and mostly steady hands of Bastyr staffers. The admissions and marketing departments got together in the Bot Med lab recently to make - cough - several thousand of these for the year's upcoming events.

If you see any of these lip balm cases around, the admissions staff made the cases with BU on the cover. Marketing was in charge of the BCNH canisters. After a highly scientific survey, it's been determined that 7 out of 10 chapped lips prefer the BCNH lip balm.

Yes. We fill these tiny cases by hand, (usually) carefully
pouring molten wax into each case, then waiting for them
to cool and solidify.

Students Boost Bastyr's Online Recipes

The Lunch & Learn series by Bastyr's dietetic interns is a wonderful opportunity for employees to learn about whole-food cooking, and it also gives the interns a little extra practice sharing their skills.

Additionally, the noon-hour classes are benefiting our website visitors. After the first class Oct. 15, we posted the recipe for Kale Chips that dietetic intern Charlotte Watts shared with Lunch & Learn participants.

The recipe section of our website is always very popular and we are always looking for tasty new recipes to post. We hope to post more recipes from the series in the weeks to come, and as always, please spread the word to students that we would love to publish their recipes online! Just send them to mslaughter@bastyr.edu.

(If this is the first you've heard of the Lunch & Learn series, contact Linda Nevius for more information. The series continues the next three Mondays at noon in the nutrition kitchen.)

San Diego Clinic Has a Name!

We are pleased to announce that Bastyr's new teaching clinic in San Diego is called Bastyr University Clinic.

Staffed by Dr. Monique Mazza and Dr. Heidi Wittman, the clinic opened in late September and is already bustling with patients. The marketing department is building new web pages on www.Bastyr.edu to inform people about this new health care option in San Diego. In the meantime, read the press release that was sent out to the media this week to learn more.

San Diego CEOs Learn about California Campus

We want all of Southern California to know about our new campus, including San Diego's business leaders. To that end, we've worked with the president's office to place a special section in the San Diego Business Journal. The eight-page supplement appears in the paper's Oct. 8 health care edition.

Eight full newspaper pages gives us lots of freedom to tell the story of Bastyr University California through photos and articles. The stories include:

  • The basics of naturopathic and integrative medicine
  • How naturopathic medicine can address California's primary care doctor shortage
  • How the new campus connect to John Bastyr and our roots in the Northwest
  • The new Bastyr University Clinic (see that story online)
  • Moira's Fitzpatrick's leadership and vision for the campus
  • Our grand opening celebration
  • Giving opportunities
The issue also includes ads welcoming Bastyr to California from many of our new friends, such as the UC San Diego Center for Integrative Medicine, Mimi Guarneri and LaVita Compounding Pharmacy.

Look for copies of the special section at both campuses in the next few weeks.

October Bastyr News Full of Delight

The successful Bastyr University California Grand Opening might have been the pride and joy of the October edition of Bastyr News, but it's also chock full of plenty of other goodies.

We included a reminder that the Founders' Day Gala is just a month away, so be sure to nominate outstanding alumni, students and friends of Bastyr University for the awards program. Nominations are needed by Oct. 15. Tickets to the gala are also available online.

Our health tip by Bastyr dietetic intern Jessica Hoffman, MS, offered 5 Ways to Save While Buying Organic, and we also featured the recipe for Big Mo Minestrone from the new edition of Feeding the Young Athlete by faculty member Cynthia Lair.

Click on the newsletter at right to read more, including upcoming events, or sign up for Bastyr's newsletters online.

Bastyr Center Promotes $20 Student Visits

For the second consecutive year, Bastyr Center is offering a fall promotion directed toward college and university students. From September 1 through October 31, students with valid school ID may take advantage of $20 appointments in any Bastyr Center department.* Students may return for multiple $20 appointments during the promotion, but may only schedule one at a time. To help them stick to their treatment plans, we're also giving students a discount on prescriptions at the Dispensary.

We're using an array of media to get the word out, including web ads, print ads in local publications, our e-newsletters and outreach at an upcoming UW student welcome event. Here's an ad we're currently running in The Stranger:
Our promotion aims to highlight conditions especially important to students who may be new to living away from home, including stress/anxiety, women's health, sexual health, digestive issues and sleep disorders. Do you know a student who could benefit from a $20 appointment?

*As is the case with the day-to-day special rates at the clinic, patients are only eligible if their health insurance does not cover the particular service.

Welcome to the New MyBU

We hope everyone's settling in to the new-look MyBU, but rest assured, the changes were more than simple cosmetics. If you recall, Jordan Lindstrom outlined a few of the major changes a couple of months ago, which include a new way to manage your documents, a search function and the calendar system.

First, regarding the new document management system: Stop using the M drive/bombadil, etc. to upload documents to MyBU. So how do you upload documents, you wonder? Either navigate to your page and there's usually a link in the upper-right corner to your docs, or go to the top menu > Campus Resources > Public Documents and navigate to your desired folder. Personally, I find the second way easier. Rather than schedule a big staff training session in which I'd talk for a hour, you'd all take notes dutifully, then promptly forget how to upload stuff, I created this video to walk you through it. Bookmark it so you can watch any time you need a refresher.

I'll be creating a how-to-edit MyBU content video and handout soon.

Thanks to everyone who's been patient as we've worked out the bugs so far. If you've got questions, concerns, bugs or gushing adoration and thanks, please use the "MyBU Website Feedback" link in the upper right.

Bastyr in the Media September 21, 2012

Since our last update a couple of weeks ago, we've had a wide variety of media coverage on a number of different and interesting topics. Here's a quick look:

The grand opening of the Bastyr University California campus was big news -- so big that it was covered in two different regions: in the Seattle area by the Bothell Reporter and in Southern California by the San Diego Business Journal. It's a great feeling to be the first and only accredited school for naturopathic medicine in the state of California, and others seem equally enthusiastic about our arrival.

The Seattle Weekly had a nice piece on the best places to take kids to eat near the Burke-Gilman Trail, and the Bastyr University Dining Commons got a well-deserved mention. Yum!

Bastyr nutrition grad Lisa Harper ('10) was featured in the Redmond Reporter and Kirkland Patch. They both did stories about how Lisa is working with local farms to help harvest extra produce for food banks. Thanks for making a difference, Lisa!

We all know how great our University is, but it's nice when other, more objective parties, agree. TheBestSchools.org recently compiled a list of the top schools for acupuncture in the U.S., and Bastyr made the Top 5. Congrats to the AOM department!
And speaking of acupuncture, while this isn't a Bastyr media mention specifically, The New York Times had a blog post recently that touted a recent study they call "the most rigorous and detailed analysis of the treatment to date," that found acupuncture can ease migraines and arthritis and other forms of chronic pain. Wow!

More media highlights to come in October!

Summer Postcards Lead Off Sept. Natural Directions

newsletter
September's Natural Directions recruiting e-newsletter led off with a collection of student summer postcards, a popular feature we reprised from last year. Here's the collection of hikers, whale-watchers, triathletes,  rock 'n roll volunteers, beach bums etc. An active bunch, our students.

Also:
  • We featured Katie Strobe, the first naturopathic medicine student to win a $24,000 Poncin Scholarship.
  • We visited Chinese Nutrition Lab to see students at work.
  • We talked to alumna Teri Rose, MS ('08), named the Best Nutritionist in the Twin Cities. She talks about marrying the marketing savvy she learned at Kraft Foods with her Bastyr whole-food education.
  • Finally, we plugged our admissions advisors hitting the road soon and reminded prospects about programs, deadlines and admissions events.
Here's the full issue.

Got news you want us to cover? Drop me a line.

A Guide to Getting Started at Bastyr

Each fall we send welcome emails to new students with reminders about orientation and class-start dates. We also introduce them to the program staff, academic advisors and financial aid mavens who will help them navigate logistics at Bastyr's two campuses. We recently emailed these guides to all new students, complete with the smiling faces of staff. Here's an example of what we sent.

Guide to Getting Started

Mementos from the California-Themed Tea @ 3

Although we can't take credit for the success of the Bastyr University San Diego Grand Opening on September 14, we heartily take credit along with the Department of Information Technology for a blast of a Tea @ 3 that very same day at our Kenmore campus.

Let me refresh your memory: Tacos, chips, salsa, guacamole, California raisins, ice cream, a pinata and glorious, glorious sunshine.

We only got a few takers to swing at the pirate's treasure pinata, including Lead Web Developer Sandra Lee, with her officemate and fellow Web Developer Des Arvidsson on the other end.

My officemate and fellow Marketing Coordinator Jon Hiskes is the bat-wielder who finally cracked the box of goodies.

The IT and marketing and media departments thank you for coming to our celebration, and we hope you had a good time! If you'd like to see what was going on at almost the exact same time at our California campus, take a look at our article "San Diego Celebrates Grand Opening of Bastyr University California."
