Free Workshop: Herbal Holiday Gift-Making

October Bastyr News: Founders' Day, Haunted Trails and More!

If you missed the most recent edition of Bastyr News, you might not be aware of some of the University's upcoming activities.

With fall quarter now upon us, that means Haunted Trails and the Founders' Day Gala both are right around the corner!

This year, the 13th annual Haunted Trails takes place Oct. 14-15 and Oct. 21-22, with trick-or-treating for tots 7 and younger from 5-7 p.m., followed by the teen and adult scarefest from 7-11 p.m., including the Haunted Trails, Hades Labyrinth, Cemetery Hill and Circus of Horrors.

And although the Founders' Day Gala isn't until Nov. 5, we wanted to give our readers plenty of time to nominate candidates for the 2011 Founders Awards, which honors alumni, students and friends of Bastyr who have distinguished themselves through outstanding professional achievement and loyal service to the University and the field of natural health science.

We also introduced our readers to the upcoming new series from Bastyr's Center for Spirituality, Science and Medicine called "going. Going! GONE?" The funny, frank and enlightening series is hosted by Warren Etheredge, and takes place in "three (conversational) acts," starting with "going" on Oct. 20; "Going!" on Nov. 3; and "GONE?" on Nov. 17. Each begins at 7 p.m. at Nalanda West, at 3902 Woodland Park Ave. N. Tickets cost $18 for general admission and $12 for students or seniors at Brown Paper Tickets.

Plus, this month's issue also features a recipe for Sesame Kale by Bastyr nutrition student Lisa Schmidt and tips from our own Dr. Benjamin Apichai on how to regain your natural energy by following a traditional Chinese medicine schedule.

Public Lecture Series Returns to Bastyr Center

This fall, Bastyr Center will once again host "Living Naturally," our free public lecture series. Lectures are led by Bastyr faculty and are held on Saturday mornings or Thursday evenings in one of our new classrooms at the clinic. As in the past, marketing will be on hand to record every lecture so we can add it to our Living Naturally Playlist on YouTube.

Join us at the Swedish SummeRun & Walk

Looking for a reason to get outside this summer? Join us in supporting the Swedish SummeRun & Walk, a fundraising event for ovarian cancer research on Sunday, July 24.

Register individually or as a team, and invite friends and family to cheer you on. Afterward, linger to enjoy refreshments and live music, and be sure to stop by the Bastyr Center booth to say hi!

The SummeRun & Walk begins at 8:15 a.m. at Madison and Minor in downtown Seattle. You can preregister at summerun.org until July 20 for $25, but the sooner you register the more time you'll have to raise the $50 in donations you'll need for a T-shirt. Registration costs $35 day-of race.

Bastyr Sponsors Upcoming City Events

The city of Kenmore invites you to a number of summer events sponsored in part by Bastyr University.

If you're still looking for a festive way to enjoy the upcoming Fourth of July holiday, join the community for a fireworks show over Lake Washington starting at 10 p.m. Monday, July 4. The main event will take place at Log Boom Park, Northeast 175th Street and 61st Avenue Northeast, where there will be food, snacks and glow-in-the-dark toys for sale.

Free parking is available at the park, as well as at Bethany Bible Chuch at 6214 N.E. Bothell Way, Kenmore Lake Building at 6161 N.E. 175th St. and Uplake Professional Center at 5723 N.E. Bothell Way.

Kenmore Summer Concert Series

Bastyr also is sponsoring the Kenmore Summer Concert Series right next to campus at St. Edward State Park, starting with a performance from the Americana band Star Anna & The Laughing Dogs (pictured at left) on Thursday, July 7.
