San Diego Clinic Has a Name!

We are pleased to announce that Bastyr's new teaching clinic in San Diego is called Bastyr University Clinic.

Staffed by Dr. Monique Mazza and Dr. Heidi Wittman, the clinic opened in late September and is already bustling with patients. The marketing department is building new web pages on www.Bastyr.edu to inform people about this new health care option in San Diego. In the meantime, read the press release that was sent out to the media this week to learn more.

San Diego CEOs Learn about California Campus

We want all of Southern California to know about our new campus, including San Diego's business leaders. To that end, we've worked with the president's office to place a special section in the San Diego Business Journal. The eight-page supplement appears in the paper's Oct. 8 health care edition.

Eight full newspaper pages gives us lots of freedom to tell the story of Bastyr University California through photos and articles. The stories include:

• The basics of naturopathic and integrative medicine
• How naturopathic medicine can address California's primary care doctor shortage
• How the new campus connect to John Bastyr and our roots in the Northwest
• The new Bastyr University Clinic (see that story online)
• Moira's Fitzpatrick's leadership and vision for the campus
• Our grand opening celebration
• Giving opportunities

The issue also includes ads welcoming Bastyr to California from many of our new friends, such as the UC San Diego Center for Integrative Medicine, Mimi Guarneri and LaVita Compounding Pharmacy.

Look for copies of the special section at both campuses in the next few weeks.

October Bastyr News Full of Delight

The successful Bastyr University California Grand Opening might have been the pride and joy of the October edition of Bastyr News, but it's also chock full of plenty of other goodies.

We included a reminder that the Founders' Day Gala is just a month away, so be sure to nominate outstanding alumni, students and friends of Bastyr University for the awards program. Nominations are needed by Oct. 15. Tickets to the gala are also available online.

Our health tip by Bastyr dietetic intern Jessica Hoffman, MS, offered 5 Ways to Save While Buying Organic, and we also featured the recipe for Big Mo Minestrone from the new edition of Feeding the Young Athlete by faculty member Cynthia Lair.

The Bastyr.edu/California website is an obvious solution, but we also have created a Bastyr University California press kit, which is a single-page pdf that's easy to print out or view online.

California Faculty Bios Now Posted!

With the Bastyr University California Grand Opening just over a week away, we've updated our People page to include the new faculty members at our San Diego campus. The new faculty members include:

• 

  Young Cho, PhD

  Young Cho, PhD — The longtime Department of Basic Sciences core faculty member is taking his experience teaching undergraduate and graduate courses for students of naturopathic medicine, acupuncture and Oriental medicine, herbal sciences and nutrition, to our new San Diego campus. 
• Nan Lin, MD, PhD  — The core faculty member in the Department of Basic Sciences and director of the human anatomy lab was formerly an assistant professor of anatomy in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Mercer University School of Medicine in Savannah, Ga. Dr. Lin believes that learning is a lifelong experience, especially for those who practice medicine.



Monique Mazza, ND

• Monique Mazza, ND — Formerly the vice president and legislative chairperson of California Naturopathic Doctors Association, Dr. Mazza will be a clinical and adjunct faculty member in the School of Naturopathic Medicine at Bastyr University California. She believes in educating and empowering her patients to understand their illness in an effort to raise awareness of their powerful healing vital force.



Tabatha Parker, ND

• Tabatha Parker, ND — The co-founder and current executive director of Natural Doctors International (NDI), is bringing her expertise in global health and naturopathic medicine to Bastyr University California as a core faculty member in the School of Naturopathic Medicine. Dr. Parker, who has been living in Nicaragua, the second-poorest country in the western hemisphere, has worked in the trenches seeing how structural violence affects people and health and will bring this first-hand knowledge to her students.
• Jessica Dominguez Rieg, PhD — The core faculty member in the Department of Basic Sciences at Bastyr University California is passionate about working with clinicians to teach students in an integrative learning environment about the fundamentals of physiology using a systems-based approach, with a focus on natural healing and whole-person medicine.

• 

  Heide Wittmann, ND

  Heide Wittmann, ND — The adjunct clinical and academic faculty member in the School of Naturopathic Medicine is a naturopathic doctor currently practicing in San Diego. Dr. Wittmann believes in inspiring patients to trust and honor the inherent healing capacity of their body, mind and soul. 

Grand Opening a Big Hit in Bastyr News

Do you subscribe to Bastyr News, our e-newsletters that goes out to nearly 30,000 prospective students, alumni, Bastyr Center patients, supporters and other friends of the University?

We had plenty to talk about this month, with the Bastyr University California Grand Opening right around the corner on Sept. 14!

For the Kenmore campus we gave a shout-out to the Department of Certificate, Community and Continuing Education and its new Medical Qigong Certificate Programs, and we also caught up with alumna Lisa Harper, MSN ('10), who has been busy developing partnerships between farms and food banks in the nearby Snohomish Valley as a volunteer with AmeriCorps VISTA.

We've also got plenty of events, including upcoming admissions info sessions both in Kenmore and in San Diego, classes ranging from Perinatal Support Group Facilitator Training to the introduction of the new Indigenous Wisdom Training Program, along with the recipe for the dining commons' famous Tofu Stroganoff and a health tip on the nutritious benefits of chia seeds.

Bastyr's Wikipedia Pages Overhauled

We've recently beefed up Bastyr's presence on a website that attracts some 400 million visitors each month. The site? Wikipedia. The University and clinic already had Wikipedia pages, but we saw an opportunity to let the site do a lot more (free) work for us.

Potential students and patients can now find much more information on the Bastyr University page, including academic programs, continuing ed and conference services, research programs and the California campus. The clinic page now includes more information about our services, treatment philosophy, special rates and external sites. We've also tweaked the John Bastyr page. Soon we'll add more photos to all of the pages.

Since Wikipedia is a collaborative project, we can't control those pages. But we'll monitor to keep them in good shape. If you see anything amiss and aren't sure how to fix it yourself, feel free to drop me a line (jhiskes@bastyr.edu).

Marketing Our New California Campus

As soon as Bastyr University California officially received accreditation, we got the ball rolling on advertising the new campus. Although we will expand our advertising plans in the future, for the time being we're focusing primarily on Southern California publications, as well as some handpicked online ad placements.

Check out the online version of LA Yoga, one of the new publications we're advertising in (our ad shown at right is on page 59).

We'll also have an ad in the San Diego Natural Guide, which comes out April 1 and will be in stores throughout the San Diego area for the next six months.

Our full ad plan will be rolling out over the next few months, and is just one way we're working to get the word out about our arrival in the golden state!

Our San Diego Campus Has a New Name!

California, San Diego, Torrey Pines, paradise ... we've heard people refer to our newest campus location by many different names. But did you know that the official name of our second campus is actually "Bastyr University California"?

The Board of Trustees voted last month to make this the formal name of the campus. A modified logo will be forthcoming.

Do you know anyone interested in applying to the ND program in San Diego? Though we are still awaiting final accreditation approval, ND applicants can now indicate their campus location preference on our application for admission.

Applications Coming in for San Diego

It's great seeing San Diego as an option in our online application. As we await accreditation, we've moving forward to work with prospective ND students to determine where they'd like to study.

Now, when prospective ND students apply online, they have the option to choose a preferred campus, or both. Once we receive word on a successful accreditation, our admissions staff will begin contacting the applicants who choose San Diego as an option. We are eager to get a better sense of how many of our prospective students are interested in studying at our new campus.

Bastyr Well-Represented at California ND Conference

Bastyr's San Diego campus is making a splash at next month's California Naturopathic Doctors Association conference in Newport Beach, where Dr. Deb Lantz will be speaking at a Bastyr University Information Session.

Attendees of the admissions event also will have the opportunity to attend the evening session, which will include a talk called "Common Acute Pediatric Conditions" by our own Tamara Cullen, ND, as well as an update on the Bastyr University San Diego campus by President Daniel K. Church.

If you know of anybody you think would be interested in attending this informative event, please send them more information about the Bastyr University Information Session, including the RSVP link. Check-in is at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15; the information session is from 2-3:30 p.m. at Newport Beach Marriott Hotel & Spa, 900 Newport Center Drive, Newport Beach, CA 92660.

And if you know anybody who might be interested in attending the conference, it continues on Sunday, Oct. 16, and includes a talk by another Bastyr ND, Dr. Paul Anderson, who will discuss Emergency Medicine for the Office with Virginia Osborne, ND. Registration is via the CNDA website.

Bastyr's San Diego Campus in the Media!

As we hoped, both local and national media had plenty to say about our announcement to add a secondary campus in San Diego in fall 2012.

KIRO-FM/97.3 immediately called us and set up an interview with President Daniel K. Church, PhD, which was broadcast the day of the announcement, Aug. 12. We have yet to get our hands on a MP3 of that piece, but we'll post it here when we do.

The Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce also spoke with Dr. Church for its article "Bastyr opening a San Diego campus." Other media mentions were in:

Broken San Diego Blog

If you tried to visit our new San Diego blog over the weekend, you may have noticed that the link to sandiego.bastyr.edu didn't work. Bummer (channeling my inner SoCal surfer...).

While the domain was working when we set it up Thursday in preparation for the announcement, it stopped working sometime Friday evening after we had told the world via news releases, Facebook and announcements on our home page. Ahhhh!

We worked on it Friday night and thought we fixed it, and it worked for most of Saturday before not resolving it again Saturday evening. To make a long story short, we have permanently fixed it by setting up a redirect from sandiego.bastyr.edu to sandiego-bastyr.blogspot.com, so feel free to pass along the former address in all of your communications. Both go to the same place.

And for the good news: Despite the hiccups, 1,921 people have viewed the San Deigo blog since we put it up Friday!

How We're Promoting the San Diego Campus

By now, you've undoubtedly heard the news that Bastyr University is opening a second campus in San Diego. We've sent out press releases to media far and wide, from around the Puget Sound area to California and beyond, and PR Director Derek Wing is already busy fielding calls for interviews, while Derek Sheppard responds to questions and comments on our Twitter and Facebook pages.

We've also created the new Bastyr University in San Diego blog to keep everyone up-to-date on the latest developments.

Eventually, all of the information on that blog will be transferred to the new website, where we expect to have a sister site just for the California campus. But in the meantime, please bookmark the new San Diego blog.
