October Issue of Natural Directions

Each month we send a newsletter to prospective students to give them a sense of what this place is really like, why students find it so transformative, what our graduates are doing in the world, why our chili is so darn tasty … things like that. I get to put together Natural Directions -- or "Natty D" -- which is a great excuse to interview faculty, students and alumni to find out what they're up to.

October's edition led off with the aforementioned narrative of Joshua Goldenberg's path to Bastyr, which paired nicely with a list of 7 questions we think are helpful for choosing a health sciences program. It also included a look at research faculty Jason Allen's project building a sauna and recruiting subjects to find out how heat treatments can "sweat out" industrial toxins. I also talked to ND alumna Emily Colwell about building a practice fresh out of school (her tip: get in a residency program if you can). Finally, we plugged the Bastyr team that went recruiting for California students at the California Naturopathic Doctors Association Conference.

The newsletter reached 9,850 potential students, and our tracking stats show it was a popular issue: Forty percent of those who opened the email clicked onward to read at least one item. Of those, 30 percent read the "7 questions" post and 23 percent opened the Goldenberg story. In the digital marketing world, as in baseball, anything approaching 30 percent success is pretty good.

One brief request: To highlight the best of what Bastyr folks are doing -- on campus, at the clinic, elsewhere -- I need tips from all of you. You're always welcome to pitch me stories at jhiskes [at] bastyr dot edu or (425) 602-3359. Tell me what we should be celebrating.

And sign up for "Natty D" and other newsletters, Bastyr News and Health E-News (for current and prospective BCNH patients).
