Bastyr University's Department of Nutrition and Exercise Science recently bit into the nation's childhood obesity problem with the launch of the APPLE Core program.
On Saturday, September 10, 2011 more than a dozen children and their parents met on campus to enjoy outdoor play in the sun, family time in the kitchen and an educational experience at the grocery store. The one-day innovative pilot program promoted obesity-prevention strategies for children and their families, including:
*Whole-food nutrition education
*Integrative physical activity
*Behavioral therapy
*Health education to promote healthy lifestyle choices
*Family culinary training to prepare healthy, balanced meals

The event, presented by Premera Blue Cross, was a pilot program for a week-long day camp for children, scheduled to launch next summer.
